Not what I originally planned to write about. #MediaFail
So, I went looking for a story about Huma Abedin’s police protection because I was going to make a snarky comment about the consequences of Michelle Bachmann’s verbal diarrhea. Then I stumbled on this article from the New York Post and became frustrated for a whole other reason. Tell me, what’s wrong with this article?
Do you see it?
Do you see what the male author did there?
Not only is Huma Abedin, whom the story is about, not even named in the headline; she is relegated to a descriptive clause in the opening paragraph. Apparently, the author doesn’t feel that a woman who serves as an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is worthy of being named in her own article. She’s simply former NY State Rep. Anthony Weiner’s wife.
I guess since she’s both a woman and not a caucasian you felt you had to make the story about her disgraced husband in order for people to care, right? Well fuck you very much.
The author and his editor both need to learn a thing or two or ten about how this tripe continues the ugly tradition of institutionalized sexism. They shouldn’t still be learning it (or rather, failing to) in a major publication like The New York Post.
